Melvin “Kamel” González Rojas was born in Boruca, an indigenous territory in the southern mountains of Costa Rica. His father, Ismael González Lázaro, was the recognized “father of the Boruca mask” and received Costa Rica’s National Prize for Traditional Culture. At age nine, Kamel picked up his first carving knife beside him.Melvin “Kamel” González Rojas nació en Boruca, territorio indígena en las montañas del sur de Costa Rica. Su padre, Ismael González Lázaro, fue el reconocido “padre de la máscara boruca” y recibió el Premio Nacional de Cultura Tradicional de Costa Rica. A los nueve años, Kamel tomó su primer cuchillo de tallar junto a él.

Today he signs his work KURA^DENKA — “the footprint of the jaguar” in the Boruca language. The jaguar walks through everything he makes: masks, canvases, and the dances he helps keep alive.Hoy firma su obra KURA^DENKA — “la huella del jaguar” en lengua boruca. El jaguar camina por todo lo que crea: máscaras, lienzos y las danzas que ayuda a mantener vivas.
